Fungal Nails

What are fungal nails?

Fungal nails, also known as onychomycosis, are a common condition that affects the toenails and, less commonly, the fingernails. It is caused by the growth of fungi, which can lead to changes in the appearance and texture of the nails. Fungal nail infections can be unsightly and, if left untreated, may cause discomfort or lead to more severe issues.

Fungal nail infections can present with various signs and symptoms, including:

1. Thickened nails
2. Brittle, crumbly nails
3. Discoloration (yellow, brown, or white)
4. Distorted nail shape
5. Build-up of debris under the nail
6. Foul odour
7. Pain or discomfort
8. Spreading of the infection to other nails

Common causes of fungal nails

Fungal nail infections are typically caused by dermatophytes, yeast, or mould that invades the nails through small cracks or injuries. The following factors can increase the risk of developing a fungal nail infection:

– Poor foot hygiene
– Excessive sweating
– Wearing tight, non-breathable shoes
– Walking barefoot in communal areas (e.g., public showers, pools)
– Diabetes or a weakened immune system
– Aging
– Nail trauma or injury

Common treatments

If you suspect you have a fungal nail infection, it’s essential to seek professional treatment from a podiatrist. Common podiatric treatments for fungal nails include:

• Topical Antifungal Medications: Your podiatrist may recommend applying antifungal nail lacquers or creams directly to the affected nails. These treatments are most effective when used as directed over several months.

• Oral Antifungal Medications: In some cases, oral antifungal medications may be prescribed to treat severe or widespread infections. These medications work from the inside out, targeting the fungus throughout the body. It’s essential to follow your podiatrist’s recommendations and take the medication for the prescribed duration.

• Nail Debridement: Your podiatrist may trim, thin, or debride the affected nails to remove fungal debris and improve the penetration of topical treatments.

• Surgical Nail Removal: In severe cases or when other treatments have failed, your podiatrist may recommend surgical removal of the affected nail. A new, healthy nail will eventually grow in its place.

Prevention

Preventing fungal nail infections is essential. Here are some tips to help you avoid them:

– Keep your feet clean and dry.
– Wear moisture-wicking socks and breathable shoes.
– Change your socks regularly, especially if they become damp.
– Avoid walking barefoot in public areas.
– Use antifungal foot powders or sprays if you are prone to infections.
– Trim your nails straight across and not too short.
– Avoid sharing nail clippers, files, or shoes with others.

It’s important to address fungal nail infections promptly to prevent them from worsening and to restore the health and appearance of your nails. Consult with your podiatrist for a personalised treatment plan that suits your specific condition.
